For most people, a refurbished iPad Air M3 is the better buy. The M4 is faster and has more memory, but refurbished it costs much more: today an 11-inch M3 starts at £480 and an 11-inch M4 at £664 (128GB Wi-Fi).

We check refurbished iPad prices from UK retailers every morning. Here’s what actually changed between the two models, and when the M4 is worth paying extra for.

Prices in the table update every morning. The design, screen, cameras and accessories are the same, so both work with the Apple Pencil Pro and the same Magic Keyboard.

What the M4 actually adds

  • Speed. Apple says the M4 is up to 30% faster than the M3. You’ll notice it in video editing, 3D apps and big games, not in browsing, streaming or note-taking.
  • More memory. 12GB instead of 8GB helps when you keep lots of apps open, and gives some headroom for Apple Intelligence features in future iPadOS updates.
  • Faster wireless. Wi-Fi 7 only matters if you have a Wi-Fi 7 router. Most UK homes don’t yet.

Everything else is the same. If you put the two side by side, you couldn’t tell them apart.

The price gap, refurbished

When we checked on 31 October 2026, the cheapest refurbished 11-inch M4 (128GB Wi-Fi) cost about £170 more than the cheapest 11-inch M3. On the 13-inch, the gap was over £200.

There’s another catch. The M4 is only a few months old, so few refurbished units are around yet. Most M4 versions were stocked by just one retailer when we checked, so there’s less competition on price. The M3 has more stock from more retailers.

Before buying a refurbished M4, check Apple’s new price too. With so little stock, the saving on a refurbished M4 can be small.

Which one do you need? It depends what you’ll use it for

The M4’s extra speed only matters for some jobs. Here’s our pick for each kind of use.

Everyday use: streaming, browsing, video calls

Our pick: the M3, from £480. Netflix, YouTube, iPlayer, web browsing, FaceTime and reading all run smoothly on the M3, and will for years. You wouldn’t notice the M4’s extra speed here. Put the money you save towards a case or a keyboard.

Work: email, documents, spreadsheets, Teams and Zoom

Our pick: the M3, with a keyboard. Office apps, Teams, Zoom and email are light work for the M3. If you keep a lot of apps and browser tabs open side by side all day, the M4’s 12GB of memory helps it switch between them without reloading, and that’s the one office case where the M4 earns its price. For split-screen work, the 13-inch makes a bigger difference than the chip.

Students and school work

Our pick: the 11-inch M3, from £480. Note-taking with an Apple Pencil, essays, research and revision apps all run well, and it gets iPadOS 27 and Apple Intelligence, so it’s set for several years. On a tighter budget, the iPad Air M2 does the same jobs for less.

Creative work: photo and video editing, drawing, music

Our pick: the M4, from £664. This is where the M4’s up to 30% extra speed and 12GB of memory pay off: exporting 4K video, editing large photo libraries, layered drawings in Procreate and big music projects. For serious drawing, consider the 13-inch for the extra canvas. For occasional editing, the M3 is still very capable.

Gaming

Our pick: the M4 if you play the most demanding games, otherwise the M3. Most App Store and Apple Arcade games run smoothly on either. The M4 helps with the newest console-style games at higher settings, and its extra memory gives more headroom for future games.

Travel and working on the go

Our pick: the 11-inch M3. It’s light and the battery life is the same on both chips. Only pay for Wi-Fi + Cellular if you’ll often be away from Wi-Fi; your phone’s hotspot covers occasional use.

Want to spend less? The iPad Air (M2) from 2024 also runs Apple Intelligence and costs less again. Compare every model on our refurbished iPad price comparison.

11-inch or 13-inch?

The 11-inch suits most people: it’s lighter to hold and cheaper. The 13-inch is better for drawing, split-screen work and watching films, but refurbished it costs around £200 more for the same chip and storage.

Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular?

Only pay for Cellular if you’ll use the iPad away from Wi-Fi often and want your own data plan. Otherwise, your phone’s hotspot does the job. Cellular models usually cost £70 to £150 more refurbished.

Before you buy a refurbished iPad Air

  • Check the warranty. Back Market gives a year; other retailers vary.
  • Check the grade. Excellent, Good and Fair iPads all work fully; the grade only describes marks on the case and screen.
  • Check the battery health if the retailer shows it.
  • Confirm the exact model: the M3 and M4 look identical, so make sure the listing names the chip.
