AirPods 5: best for most people

AirPods Pro 3: best for commuters, runners and hearing support

AirPods Max 2: best for home and long flights

Older models worth buying refurbished
- AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (2024): H2 chip and USB-C case, discontinued in September 2026. A good refurbished buy if you like the open-ear fit. Search Amazon Renewed.
- AirPods Pro 2 (2022): H2 chip with in-ear noise cancellation. Later units have a USB-C case and IP54 rating; earlier ones use Lightning. Search Amazon Renewed.
- AirPods Max, USB-C (2024): the original design with a USB-C port, sold until March 2026. Search Amazon Renewed.
- AirPods 3 (2021): no noise cancellation and a Lightning or MagSafe case. Only worth it at a low price. Search Amazon Renewed.
We would skip AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro (1st generation) now. Both are years old, and an older battery is the most likely thing to fail.
Will they work with your phone?
AirPods work best with an iPhone, iPad or Mac. You get one-tap pairing, and automatic switching between your Apple devices.
They also work with Android phones as a normal Bluetooth headset. Apple’s guide confirms you can listen and talk, but you cannot use Siri. Features that rely on Apple’s ecosystem, such as automatic switching, are not available.

- Older models have a setup button on the back of the case.
- Check the charging port: newer models use USB-C, many older ones use Lightning.

What to check when buying refurbished AirPods
Earbuds go in your ears, so refurbished AirPods need more care than a refurbished phone. Check these points before and after buying.
- Hygiene: the listing should say the earbuds and case have been cleaned. When they arrive, look at the mesh grilles for wax or debris.
- New ear tips: for AirPods Pro, the seller should fit new ear tips. If not, buy a fresh set before use.
- Battery: the batteries cannot be swapped easily, so battery health matters most. Test a full listening session in your return period and compare it with Apple’s figures above.
- Matching parts: both earbuds and the case should be the same model and pair without errors.
- Not linked to someone else: they should set up on your Apple Account without asking for another person’s details.
- Returns and warranty: Amazon Renewed items are backed by the Amazon Renewed Guarantee. Check the listing for the exact terms.
Apple’s cleaning guide recommends a soft, dry, lint-free cloth for the case and a dry, soft-bristled brush for the charging port. Do not get liquid in the port or poke anything into it.

- Switch noise cancellation off in quiet places.
- Store them in the case, which protects them and keeps them charged.

Buy AirPods 5 if you want comfortable everyday earbuds with noise cancellation. Choose AirPods Pro 3 for the best noise cancellation, workout tracking and hearing features. Go for AirPods Max 2 only if you want over-ear headphones. To save money, a refurbished AirPods 4 with ANC or AirPods Pro 2 is a sensible buy. Make sure the ear tips are new and test the battery inside the return period.
