Grading Refurbished Electronics: What It All Means

When buying refurbished electronics, understanding the grading system is crucial. This grading, particularly the cosmetic condition, helps you gauge what to expect from the device’s appearance and usability. Whether it’s a refurbished iPhone, Laptop, Dyson or any other tech gadget, knowing the grades ensures you make a confident and informed purchase.

What is a Refurbished Grade?

A refurbished grade is a classification system used to indicate the cosmetic condition of a refurbished product. This grading helps you understand how many imperfections a device might have, how much it has been used, and the packaging it comes with. Typically, refurbished grades are either Excellent, Good or Fair

Excellent: This is Near-mint condition with minimal signs of use.

Good: Light scratches or scuffs, slightly more signs of use.

Fair: Noticeable signs of use and wear, including significant scratches and marks.

On Refurbished Tech Deals we use the above grading system but other suppliers also use Grade A to C. We map this to our grading system which is the easiest to understand

What Does an Excellent (or Grade A) grading Mean?

Refurbished devices with an Excellent grading are the best you can get in the refurbished market. These products are in near-mint condition, showing next to no signs of previous use.

For instance:

Excelling Phones: Minimal scuffing, virtually unnoticeable.

Excellent Laptops: Look almost new, with minimal marks on the lid, keyboard, and other areas.

What Does a Good (or Grade B) grading Mean?

Refurbished devices with a Good rating have light scratches or scuffs but are still in good cosmetic condition. They are thoroughly tested and fully functional:

Good Phones: Minor cosmetic imperfections.

Good Laptops: Light scratches and minor signs of use.

What Does a Fair (or Grade C) grading Mean?

Refurbished devices with a Fair grading show more significant signs of wear and tear. Despite cosmetic issues, they are tested and confirmed to be in working order:

Fair Phones: Noticeable scratches and wear.

Fair  Laptops: Visible signs of intense usage, with more prominent marks.

How Do Merchants Grade Their Refurbished Devices?

Different retailers or marketplaces may have their own grading systems, but they generally adhere to Excellent (Grade A), Good (Grade B) or Fair (Grade C).

Each device is cleaned, tested, and certified by each seller. All devices are put back on factory reset and wiped clean, erasing any previous personal data to give you a brand new user experience.

Can I see a picture of the refurbished item?

All sellers and marketplaces do not show individual pictures of the products as unlike new products no 2 devices will look exactly the same, one might have a scratch on one side and the other might have one at the top. This is why the grading system was put in place

Do Refurbished Products Come with a Warranty?

Most reputable retailers offer warranties on their refurbished products, typically ranging from 30 days to a full year. This warranty covers any functional issues that might arise, giving you peace of mind.

Are the Batteries of Refurbished Products in Good Condition?

Reputable sellers ensure that the batteries of refurbished devices are in good working condition. All smartphone batteries are guaranteed to have at least 80% of their original capacity. Batteries from all other devices (tablets, laptops, etc.) are guaranteed to have at least 85% of their original capacity. This is regardless of the grading system.

To Summarise

Understanding the grading system of refurbished electronics can significantly impact your purchasing decision. Excellent products offer near-mint condition, Good devices come with minor cosmetic flaws, and Fair items show noticeable wear but are fully functional. Always check the grading system used by the retailer to ensure you know exactly what you’re getting.
